In the far northwest of Croatia, in the idyllic village of Cvetlin behind Trakošćan, nestled in solitude on a gentle hillside and at the state border with Slovenia, stands a white Zagorec 'hiža', 300 years old!!! It is actually 2 connected 'hiže' with a total area of 120 m2, situated on land covering 9,344 m2. These are valuable and well-preserved examples of traditional regional architecture dating from around 1700, with one even retaining an original thatched roof, which the owner has protected with tarpaulin. Built from wooden beams in the traditional 'Croatian weave' technique, daubed with clay and covered with bundles of rye straw, they preserve the original three-room internal layout which, across the 2 connected houses, creates 6 rooms. Other remarkable features of these examples of authentic architecture: a smaller covered veranda extending along the southern facade, walls articulated with small window openings, original carpentry with shutters, preserved wooden plank floors, wooden ceilings with exposed beams, one preserved 'black kitchen', 2 beautiful fireplaces, original room arrangement and interior furnishing with valuable pieces of furniture and functional objects (pottery, sacred items and willow-woven objects). On the northern side of the building, there is an entrance to a preserved stone-built cellar containing traditional winemaking implements, and adjoining the house is storage space holding many archaic objects still in use. Because all features of this building method have been carefully maintained over centuries, the property together with its inventory represents significant cultural, aesthetic, artistic and ethnographic value that warrants preservation: the property was recently on the List of Preventively Protected Cultural Property and is registered in the Register of Cultural Property of the Republic of Croatia. On the northwestern side of the courtyard of this complex there is a spring with drinking water; the property has electricity and water. Other location details: - access via a passage beneath an upright oak cross with a sculpted Christ figure and a lime wood statue of the Virgin Mary; - from the bench in front of the house, there is a far-reaching view across the undulating Zagorec hillsides and beautiful, fertile valleys, and towards the Church of St. Peter and Paul; - behind the 'hiža' there stand side by side 2 old state boundary stones: 1. erected in the time of Empress Maria Theresa; on the other, the Germans carved the letters NDH in 1941, and on the opposite, Slovenian side of the stone a large letter 'D' (the letter denoting Deutschland, as the Nazis occupied and annexed Slovenia to the Third Reich).
