Summer heat on Croatia’s coast: a simple shade routine for the home

A coastal home does not need a complicated timetable on a hot day. This practical sequence connects the regional DHMZ warning with European Commission guidance on shading and cooling, without promising a particular indoor temperature.

Give the warning outlook a fixed place

DHMZ operates its heat-warning system from 15 May to 15 September. Its overview covers Croatian regions for the current day and the following four days, using four danger levels from no danger to very high danger.¹

Open the DHMZ overview in the morning, select the relevant region and note the validity period and level before arranging the day.¹

Block sunlight before it shapes the room

The European Commission recommends keeping direct sunlight out of the dwelling as much as possible to limit the rise in indoor temperature. It lists blinds, shutters and window films as straightforward options.²

Move through the home room by room in the morning and close the available shading wherever direct sunlight reaches the windows.²

Coordinate air movement and cooling

The European Commission says comfort fans, like crosswinds, can refresh people while using much less energy than air conditioners. A fan used alongside air conditioning can allow a higher thermostat setting, while airing out during active cooling should be avoided.²

For each part of the day, choose deliberately between open windows and active cooling instead of running both at the same time.²

Use a short routine, not a grand promise

The DHMZ level describes a regional warning, while the EU guidance concerns individual actions inside the home. A short note of the level, shaded rooms and selected cooling mode creates a repeatable routine, but does not guarantee an indoor temperature or fixed energy use.^1,2

Three morning checks are enough for the routine: DHMZ region and validity, the position of the shading, and the choice of fan or air conditioner.^1,2
