Motorway, coastal road, ferry: the three speeds of the Croatian coast
The Croatian coast is not equally connected: places near a motorway junction, places on the coastal road and places across the sea live at three different speeds. Whoever picks a location also picks one of the three.

Three levels of the network
The automobile club's travel information covers motorways and state roads, and its map already shows the hierarchy: fast corridors in the hinterland, the coastal road by the sea and local roads to the towns.1
For the islands and part of the peninsulas the network continues by sea: coastal lines are a public service arranged by the ministry in charge.2
What the level means for a place
Closeness to a motorway junction means the airport and the big cities are an hour or two away regardless of season, while a place deep on the coastal road pays multiples for the same distance in summer.1
Places across the sea live by the sailing schedule, with everything that means for work, school and urgent situations.2
