How to use Zagreb’s noise map during an apartment viewing

Start with the map’s purpose

The City of Zagreb describes its strategic noise map as a tool for assessing exposure from transport and industry. It treats road, rail and air traffic and industrial installations separately, while also providing information to the public.¹

Do not confuse Lden and Lnight

Zagreb’s map uses the day-evening-night indicator Lden and the night indicator Lnight, both expressed in dB(A). The European Commission also explains that strategic maps for major agglomerations and transport sources are published on a five-year cycle.^1,2

Record the map and listening check separately

Strategic maps represent calculated exposure patterns, whereas a viewing captures one particular moment. Record the source, indicator and map layer separately from the time, window position and sound you notice on site.^1,2
