Pazar before work: how the market sets the rhythm of a Dalmatian morning
Whoever moves to Dalmatia becomes part of the place fastest at the market. The pazar works in the morning, the goods come from surrounding fields and the sea, and the talk at the stall is worth as much as the purchase.

Why the market and not the supermarket
Split's tourist board lists the pazar among the city's main experiences, and what is an experience for a guest is a weekly routine for a resident: vegetables, fish and cheese arrive from the surroundings and the islands.1
The county tourist board highlights the gastronomic tradition of the whole region, and it begins exactly at the stalls: seasonal produce decides what gets cooked that week.2
When to come and how to buy
The best choice is early morning, and towards noon the stalls empty: whoever comes regularly at the same time, to the same sellers, quickly earns advice and the odd fig on top of the bill.1
Prices are displayed, but conversation is part of the culture: asking where the goods are from and what is best today opens more doors than haggling.2
