A house by the state road: judging noise without a noise map

European rules require noise maps for large agglomerations, but a house on a coastal road in a smaller town does not appear on them. The assessment then goes the old way: come, stand and listen, but with a plan.

Why the map often does not exist

The noise mapping framework covers large agglomerations and the busiest roads, so smaller coastal towns along state roads stay off the maps.¹

For such places the source is your own ear, and the automobile club's traffic information shows when traffic peaks and when it is worth coming to listen.²

How to listen with a plan

Three appointments give the picture: morning rush, afternoon and night, because the same road carries completely different traffic in August and November.²

Inside the house you listen room by room: a bedroom facing the road is different from a living room facing the road, and the layout, unlike the location, can sometimes be rearranged.¹

The seasonal factor

Coastal roads carry several times more traffic in summer than in winter, so a November viewing without a summer appointment gives a deceptively quiet picture.^2,1
